The Terrell Experience

The Terrell experience is a journey of discovery that incorporates a dynamic educational environment where scholastic excellence is pursued and fostered. C.H. Terrell Academy is an Universal Literacy Institution. The instructors of C.H. Terrell Academy have been awarded silver, gold, and platinum medals by the Universal Literacy System.

Life-long Discovery:
Throughout the curriculum, C.H. Terrell Academy actively emphasizes the development of self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-direction. Children are embraced in a Christian environment that enables them to meaningfully express their uniqueness and exuberant creativity. C.H. Terrell Academy is a community experience which cultivates our children to become dynamic leaders grounded in their values and committed to good citizenship.

Individualized Attention:
Small class sizes are led by credentialed teachers and teaching assistants using the most advanced instructional techniques. Throughout the educational path, the children are challenged and provided thought-provoking experiences at each grade level.

Personalized Curriculum: Because we understand that children have unique learning styles - including tactile, visual, and auditory - C.H.T.A employs specialists to compliment each child's unique approach to learning. In addition to the in-class teaching staff, students benefit from enrichment specialists in a variety of academic areas. With a focus on expanding and enhancing the curriculum, they provide expert guidance in: science and technology studies; accelerated math programs; library and research skills; art technique and appreciation; drama; performing arts; and physical education.

Assessment

Assessment is both formal and informal throughout the grades. Students are offered multiple opportunities to express themselves using a variety of modalities and their assessment is gauged individually as well as collectively. Parents receive progress reports four times a year and attend parent/teacher conferences twice a year. However, we recognize that parents and teachers are partners and we encourage regular informal communication as well.

Classroom Assessment

In addition to written tests and quizzes, students are given the opportunity to express their learning in other ways such as Writing, Technology, Student Performance, and Evaluations. See school brochure for more details.

Standardized Assessments

C.H.T.A. uses the California Achievement Testing Program for standardized testing in the Grades of Kindergarten, Third, Fifth, Eight, and Twelfth. The results provide teachers, administrators, and parents with information that guides individual student and school instruction. Students are assessed in the areas of Reading, Writing, Mathematics, and Science. These sections evaluate core content knowledge, process related abilities, and reasoning skills.

In Grades Three, Five, and Eight, students are assessed in relation to core knowledge of subject matter. Performance is defined in terms of National, Suburban, and Independent school norms. Students are given scale scores, percentile ranks, and stanines based on their performance.
